Chapter 387: Enfeoffment of the Buddha, Changes in the Shang Dynasty (6000 words)
Leiyin Ancient Temple.
The Buddha Dipamkara sat high on a lotus pedestal, and around him were Samantabhadra, Cihang, Manjusri, Chi Jingzi and other twelve golden immortals from the Jiejiao sect, who were now in control of Mount Sumeru.
They were originally discussing the changes in the Conferred Gods.
Not long ago, news came from the Chan sect that Yang Jian gave up the Southern Continent and allowed the Chan sect to control the matter of conferring gods on that continent.
"The Heavenly Venerable sent Jiang Ziya to take the list and go to the Southern Continent to preside over the Conferred Gods. The Eastern Continent is the previously deceased Patriarch of Demon Subduing. He reappears and also holds the Conferred Gods List."
Taoist Cihang said slowly.
He attained the status of a Bodhisattva and called himself Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva.
"The Patriarch of Demon Subduing? He should have died under the seat of the Saint Jie Yin. Senior Brother Nan Ji saw it with his own eyes. Could it be that Yang Jian pulled him from the List of Conferred Gods and gave him the responsibility of being conferred a deity?"
Manjushri Bodhisattva asked.
Buddha Dipankara shook his head slowly: "Yang Jian is very smart. He gave up the power to confer gods in the Southern Continent as a retreat to advance. He knows in his heart that he alone cannot subdue all living beings, so he gave up the Southern Continent in exchange for the support of Yuanshi Tianzun. But there is one thing I don't understand."
"What is the matter that the Buddha is talking about?"
Guanyin Bodhisattva asked.
"Of course, what does Yang Jian want Yuanshi Tianzun to support him for? He originally had the support of the Heavenly Court and Jiejiao, but he had never relied on the forces of the two parties. He forced the two Western saints to leave by himself and removed the biggest obstacle to the Conferred God. But now he is seeking support from Yuanshi Tianzun. This move is unusual and worrying."
"Buddha means that Yang Jian is coming for us?"
"That should be the case. Currently, only the Northern Continent and the Western Continent have not been hit by the catastrophe. Although we have occupied Mount Xumi and obtained these fruit positions, these fruit positions are the legacy of the two saints in the West. The List of Gods cannot control Mount Xumi. The authority of this world is not in the hands of the Heavenly Court. Yang Jian will definitely not give up."
"According to the Buddha's opinion, how should we deal with this? Yang Jian's whereabouts are elusive and we don't know where he is. Even if we want to stop him, we are powerless."
The Bodhisattvas asked hurriedly.
They were very worried. After all, Yuanshi Tianzun was their backer. Now they realized that their backer had been bribed by Yang Jian and their power was cut off. They suddenly felt empty in their hearts.
After all, the lessons of the two Western saints are right before our eyes.
"I have been feeling uneasy lately. When I was meditating, I often felt that something big was going to happen. I guessed that Yang Jian must have been planning Mount Xumi. Just now, I looked casually into the mountain and found two interesting people."
As the Buddha Dipamkara spoke, he stretched out his hand and pointed. The image of Mount Sumeru appeared in the air, as if there was a pair of eyes overlooking Mount Sumeru from a high place. The view suddenly zoomed in, and an old man and a young man appeared in it.
In the video, the old man took out a list and asked everyone to write their names, and then a powerful force descended.
Everyone was excitedly practicing the techniques brought by the great power.
The more the three Bodhisattvas looked at it, the more shocked they became: "What kind of magical power is this? As long as you write your name, you can master so many skills. Could this be the power of the Conferred God List?"
Buddha Dipankara nodded and said, "That should be the case. If there is only the List of Conferred Gods, it would be fine. It is just to collect more minds for Lingshan. However, those methods are deeply involved with Buddhism and have no similarities with the path to minor enlightenment. I can't tell what kind of methods they are."
The faces of the Bodhisattvas turned ugly in an instant. They also realized that those methods were extraordinary. This meant that Yang Jian wanted to cut off the source of the problem again and destroy the original Hinayana Buddhist path of the Lingshan lineage.
The Hinayana Buddhism was founded by two saints from the West. Because the two saints from the West wanted to win over the Chan teaching, they told Yuanshi Tianzun the method.
Yuanshi Tianzun naturally looked down upon this Western method, but that didn't mean his disciples did the same.
The Twelve Golden Immortals have different statuses.
The Taoist temples of people with high cultivation levels such as Taiyi Zhenren and Guangchengzi are located in the best blessed land.
As for Manjusri, Cihang and Samantabhadra, they are at the back of the Twelve Golden Immortals. Compared with other brothers, their Taoism is mediocre and their magical powers are not sophisticated. They can only rely on the reputation of Yuanshi Tianzun to establish Taoist temples in overseas fairy mountains. Compared with the Shenzhou mainland, it is still a little worse. The advantage of overseas fairy mountains is tranquility, but the disadvantage is also tranquility. If they cannot recruit disciples, then what is the point of establishing a Taoist temple?
Therefore, they tried the Western teachings and prepared to look for opportunities in Xiniu Hezhou. After the two Western saints left the mountain, they seized the opportunity and, led by Dipankara, entered Mount Sumeru.
But before he could even sit down, Yang Jian attacked him.
How not to make them anxious.
Seeing that the Bodhisattvas were uneasy, Dipankara Buddha spoke to comfort them, "Don't panic. Yang Jian used his incarnation to lay out a plan instead of attacking directly to seize Mount Xumi, which means that he is determined to fight with us."
"A fight? Yang Jian has a precious innate treasure bestowed by the Jade Emperor, and we have nothing in our hands. What can we use to fight Yang Jian?"
Manjusri looked panicked.
"This is not an ordinary duel. This time we are competing for the path, not the ability to fight. Yang Jian intends to use the List of Conferred Gods to spread the new Dharma in Lingshan, and he wants to compare it with the original Hinayana Buddhism in Lingshan. Those who climbed the mountain originally came to Lingshan to seek the Minor Accomplishment Dharma, so what's wrong with giving it to them? The Minor Accomplishment Dharma is the Lingshan Dharma, which directly points to the Buddhahood. They can't help but be tempted. As long as we open the mountain gate and spread the wonderful Dharma, Yang Jian's plot will fall apart."
The Buddha Dipankara continued, "I have a copy of the Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra. Bodhisattvas can also write down the Buddhist teachings they have realized and distribute them to spread across the four continents. I want to see how Yang Jian responds."
"Then Yang Jian went up the mountain~"
"I will go meet him first, so I can see who the Tathagata in the Dharma he is teaching is!"
Light the way.
In Mount Sumeru.
"The Buddha's Dharma is called Mahayana Buddhism, which aims to save all living beings, free them from the sea of suffering, and enable everyone to become a Buddha~~"
The boy Shanhui sat under a bodhi tree and narrated the great path of the Buddha:
"The current Dharma of Lingshan is the Dharma of the Hinayana. Although it can save oneself, it is difficult to save all living beings as widely as the Mahayana. Only the Mahayana Buddhism, with compassion in mind, develops the Bodhi mind, practices the Bodhisattva path, and saves all living beings from the sea of suffering. This is the ultimate Dharma, which can enable all living beings to be liberated."
"Wrong, wrong, wrong!"
A voice suddenly rang out.
Everyone couldn't help but glare in the direction of the sound, wanting to see who was interrupting them from listening to the Buddha's wonderful teachings.
I saw that the person coming was an old monk with a kind face and wearing a cassock.
"Old monk, you have no right to speak here, just listen obediently."
Everyone cursed angrily.
Shanhui Boy: "Where are you from, old man? What advice do you have?"
The old monk bowed and said, "I am the Zen Master Wuchao. I naturally come from a different place. I cannot say that I am giving advice. I just cannot bear to see anyone belittling my minor attainments in Buddhism."
"So you are the Zen Master Wuchao. I wonder what you think is wrong with what I said?"
"The Hinayana Buddhism strictly observes the precepts and focuses on self-cultivation in order to achieve liberation. First save yourself and then save others. If you yourself have not achieved liberation, how can you talk about saving sentient beings? The Hinayana Dharma is a step-by-step approach with a solid foundation. This is the right path."
Zen Master Wuchao said.
The boy Shanhui shook his head and said, "The Mahayana Buddhism benefits all living beings through the six perfections: generosity, precepts, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom. All living beings have Buddha nature. The Mahayana Buddhism can awaken the Buddha nature of all living beings and help them embark on the path of Bodhi together."
"The teachings of the Hinayana emphasize personal liberation, staying away from worldly disturbances and focusing on inner practice. Only in this way can one realize the true meaning of Buddhism in silence and not be disturbed by the outside world. However, the Mahayana Buddhism focuses too much on external behavior and saving people, which can easily lead to attachment."
Shanhui Boy: "Persistence is also a process of practice. Although Mahayana Buddhism faces many challenges, it is in the process of saving sentient beings that we constantly sharpen ourselves and achieve the supreme Bodhi. The teachings of the Hinayana are only for the benefit of oneself, and it is difficult to show the greatness of Buddhism."
"The teachings of the Hinayana are not meant to benefit oneself, but are based on personal liberation and the accumulation of merit for saving others in the future. The practice of the Hinayana is simpler and purer, and easier to practice."
"The Mahayana Buddhism is concerned with all living beings. No matter when or where, it is our responsibility to save all living beings. How can the Hinayana Buddhism compare to such a broad mind and responsibility?"
"Each has its own path, and it cannot be generalized. Hinayana Buddhism is suitable for people with a shallow foundation, who can practice step by step and make steady progress. Although Mahayana Buddhism is profound, not everyone can practice it."
The two figures debated, and the onlookers couldn't help but listen in rapt attention.
Sometimes they tend to follow Theravada Buddhism and are able to cultivate themselves, and sometimes they tend to follow Mahayana Buddhism and love all living beings.
"What do you mean by small success or big success? If you keep debating like this, are we going to have to wait here for you to come up with a conclusion before going up the mountain? Stop it now. We'll have plenty of time to debate once we get to the mountain."
The old man suddenly urged.
Everyone just came to their senses.
The boy Shanhui nodded and said, "Then let's go up the mountain and debate again."
Zen Master Wuchao was transformed from Randang. Upon hearing this, he looked at the two men deeply. There was no doubt that the old man was Yang Jian in disguise, but he could not tell the origin of this boy Shanhui.
It should be the Tathagata in the mouth of the vessel, but who is the Tathagata?
Zen Master Wu Chao shook his head and said, "We must determine who is superior. We might as well have a debate on the way. When we reach the Leiyin Ancient Temple, I think you will realize that your Mahayana Dharma is an unorthodox path."
Then, the two of them climbed the mountain while debating.
The more Zen Master Wuchao listened, the more shocked he became. He was deeply shocked by the Buddha's great aspirations.
The boy Shanhui also had some enlightenment. He had never been exposed to the Hinayana Buddhism of the Western religion before, so he was a little disdainful of it. But after listening to what Zen Master Wuchao said, he realized that Hinayana Buddhism also had many merits and was not superior or inferior to Mahayana Buddhism.
The boy Shanhui was naturally transformed by Taoist Duobao.
As everyone climbed, the Leiyin Ancient Temple became closer.
When everyone arrived in front of the Leiyin Ancient Temple, it suddenly rained heavily and the ground was full of mud.
Suddenly, Master Wuchao said, "Since you say that Mahayana Buddhism can help people become Buddhas, why don't we make a bet and see who will be the Buddha first? The superiority of our Dharma will be determined by this."
He didn't know where the boy Shanhui came from, but he could guess that his goal was also to attain the Buddhahood of Mount Sumeru, otherwise there would be no need to create the Mahayana Buddhism.
"it is good."
Shanhui responded.
Then the figure of Zen Master Wuchao flashed and he arrived at the steps of the Leiyin Ancient Temple. He looked back proudly and found that Shanhui was still there, motionless.
"I won in the end. The Hinayana Buddhism has a high level of cultivation, while the Mahayana Buddhism focuses too much on saving all living beings and neglects one's own cultivation. Without cultivation, what can you use to compete with me for the position of Buddha?"
Zen Master Wuchao laughed, then turned around and climbed the stairs.
The gate of Leiyin Ancient Temple was wide open. He walked in with a smile, then turned around and looked at Shanhui Boy with pride: "After all, the Hinayana Buddhism is superior."
As soon as he finished speaking, he felt something was wrong. He looked down and saw that the ground was not the original green stone slab, but dense black hair. The owner of the hair was Shanhui, who was worried that Master Wuchao would step on the mud, so he let the hair down and spread it on the ground, so that Master Wuchao could enter the Leiyin Ancient Temple with dignity, and also wanted to help him become a Buddha.
The boy Shanhui bowed and said: "Your Excellency is the first person I have converted to Buddha through the Mahayana Buddhism."
Zen Master Wuchao shook his head, and then his figure blurred. After solidifying again, he revealed the true appearance of Buddha Dipamkara, and the lotus pedestal he sat on was shining brightly.
"What a great Mahayana Buddhism, it really has the appearance of Buddha. Who are you? Where did Yang Jian invite you from?"
Randang controls Mount Sumeru, and his every word resonates with this world. The words he speaks are the will of this world.
When he said that the boy Shanhui had the qualities of a Buddha, he suddenly felt that the authority over Mount Sumeru that he controlled was gradually decreasing, as a part of it was being separated from him.
"How could this be?"
The Buddha Dipamkara looked shocked.
He had clearly sent Bodhisattvas to spread Buddhism in the small town, and the position of Buddhism on Mount Xumi should have been extremely stable. How could this situation have occurred?
"Good, good~"
The boy Shanhui's body shape changed, revealing the appearance of Duobao.
"Duobao, it's you! What kind of method do you have to take away the authority of Mount Xumi without my approval? I am the Buddha, the ancestor of all Buddhas. Even the Conferred God List cannot take away the authority without my consent."
Ran Deng questioned.
The old man leading the donkey changed his appearance and revealed Yang Jian. Yang Jian held the Investiture of the Gods and said with a smile, "There is not only one Buddha. I have to thank the Buddha Dipankara for his abdication. Otherwise, I would have no chance of taking Mount Xumi!"
Abdication
When Ran Deng thought about it carefully, he instantly understood that Yang Jian had made him say certain words without leaving any trace, and Mount Xumi obeyed his words and transferred the power to the new Buddha.
"Impossible. When the two saints from the West asked me to take over Mount Xumi, they clearly said that there is only one Buddha. Even if you are in charge of the List of Gods, you cannot change the fact that I am the Buddha."
Yang Jian nodded: "The two saints in the west have defined the fruition of Mount Xumi, and it will eventually be handed over to the Conferred God List to be considered completed. Although I cannot change it, I can add some things based on the two saints in the west."
"What did you add?"
Ran Deng asked.
"It was added just now. Buddha Dipankara will know it naturally after carefully sensing it."
Yang Jian laughed.
Randeng concentrated and sensed it, and his expression suddenly changed.
There is indeed only one Buddha.
But he is still the Buddha, just without the authority of Mount Sumeru. Na Duobao is still the Buddha.
Yang Jian surprisingly divided the position of Buddha into three parts: the past, the present and the future. The moment he acknowledged Mahayana Buddhism, part of the authority of Mount Sumeru flowed to Duobao Taoist, allowing him to ascend to the current position of Buddha.
"Master Duobao, please admit that I also have the qualities of a Buddha. If so, I will be the future Buddha. Together, you and I will control most of the authority of Mount Xumi, and we can exclude Buddha Dipankara and completely take back the authority of Mount Xumi."
Yang Jian said.
Duobao nodded and was about to speak.
"Absolutely impossible! You don't have any Buddhist skills at all. You have no chance of becoming a Buddha."
The Buddha Dipamkara said angrily.
"Indeed."
Yang Jian nodded: "But I have already comprehended the Mahayana Buddhism. As long as I have a moment, I can make some progress. It is not difficult to achieve a bodhisattva path."
The fruit of the Bodhisattva's Way is the manifestation of the fruit of the Golden Immortal's Way in Buddhism. The future Buddha does not need to have the fruit of the Buddha's Way right now. After all, only those who have cultivated to the level of the Hunyuan Daluo Golden Immortal can have the fruit of the Buddha's Way.
If you want to ascend to the throne of Buddha, you must have the Buddha's fruit.
But the future Buddha does not need that. The future is a matter of the future. All he needs is the Bodhisattva’s fruit to gain the recognition of Mount Sumeru.
The Randang Tao sect is extremely popular.
Now he could only watch helplessly as part of the authority of Mount Xumi was forcibly taken away, feeling extremely heartbroken. The rise of Buddhism was a trend of heaven and earth, and he thought that after he ascended to the position of Buddha, he only needed to wait for the right time to come and enjoy the fruits of the rise of Buddhism, so that he could take the opportunity to be canonized.
Who would have thought that before Buddhism could flourish, the authority of Mount Sumeru would be taken away.
He could not stand it immediately. He had planned to acknowledge that any one of Cihang, Manjusri, Samantabhadra, Chijingzi, etc. had the qualities of a Buddha, so that they could enter the third place in Buddhism and become the future Buddha.
Suddenly he remembered that these people had been sent by him to spread the Hinayana Buddhism and were not in Mount Sumeru.
However, the other disciples did not have a deep understanding of Buddhism and were simply unable to compete for the position of future Buddha.
He suddenly remembered that there was another person in Mount Sumeru, who had attained the status of a bodhisattva, but he was not on the same path as him.
But things have come to this point, and the Buddha Dipamkara can't care about anything else. Giving it to that person is better than letting Yang Jian get the position of the future Buddha.
"The future Buddha is Maitreya, the great disciple of the two saints in the West. He is the orthodox of Western religion."
As soon as he finished speaking, Randang felt that the position of the Buddha had changed again, and the authority over Mount Sumeru that he controlled disappeared even faster.
"Master Duobao, my method is really useful. With just a little trick, Ran Deng was fooled again and again!"
Yang Jian laughed.
"What did you say!"
Randeng's expression changed and he asked in a cold voice.
Yang Jian explained, “Master Randeng, as the first Buddha, you naturally have all the authority of Mount Xumi. Master Duobao originally occupied the current position of Buddha, but he only had one-third of the authority, and the rest was all under the control of Master Randeng. Yang Jian just used a trick to make you think that I really know how to practice the Buddhist method, so as to urge you to divide the authority again. You don’t know that among the three highest levels of Buddhism in the past, present and future, the most important one is the present. Once you completely divide the authority, the authority will flow to the most important level, so Master Duobao can occupy 50% of the authority of Mount Xumi, and the past Buddha and the future Buddha will share the remaining 50%.”
After saying this, Yang Jian removed Xi Niu Hezhou from the Conferred God List, and set up a separate sub-list and handed it to Duobao Taoist: "The Conferred God List of Beijuluzhou is entirely up to you, uncle."
Afterwards, Duobao entered Mount Xumi and named himself Tathagata Buddha, sparking many open and secret struggles. Countless disciples of the Jiejiao entered Mount Xumi together under the leadership of Duobao.
The Tathagata Buddha used the List of Conferred Gods to widely enfeoff disciples of the Jie Religion. The three thousand Buddhas, five hundred Arhats, eight great Vajras, and countless Bodhisattvas were all listed.
As for the original three people, Cihang, Manjusri and Samantabhadra, the Buddha did not take away their positions as Bodhisattvas. After all, there are so many Bodhisattvas now, so three or four more are nothing.
Southern Jambu Continent, the city of Chaoge.
Emperor Xin sat high on the throne, listening to the discussions of his ministers below, and felt like his headache was about to come back.
Ten years ago, ever since he issued the policy that slaves could become citizens of the Shang Dynasty if they made meritorious contributions, the Shang Dynasty had been in turmoil.
This was totally inconsistent with what Emperor Xin had in mind.
The original intention of this policy was to better build the Star-Picking Tower for the immortals, so that they would have a place to stay in Chaoge City that was worthy of their status.
Of course, if you want to live in the Zhaixing Tower, you will naturally need to spend a lot of resources.
After all, Chaoge is close to the great Dao and has a strong Dao charm. Want to practice Taoism without money? That's just dreaming.
At first, the Zhaixing Tower brought a large amount of material income to the Shang Dynasty, making the Shang Dynasty look increasingly prosperous.
Later, for some unknown reason, there were more and more incidents of immortals causing trouble in the city.
Most of them were fellow practitioners fighting and robbing treasures, as if the money was not enough to support their practice in the Zhaixing Tower.
Emperor Xin didn't care about this at all. After all, the Zhaixing Tower perfectly realized the original idea of restricting immortals and bringing in revenue.
Gradually, things started to take a strange turn.
I don't know where the news came from, but it said that the Zhaixing Tower in Chaoge was built to harvest many Qi Refiners and make them fall into self-strife in exchange for the long-term stability of the Shang Dynasty.
This rumor became more and more intense, and those immortals hated Chaoge so much that they began to influence the princes and rebel against the Shang Dynasty.
Recently, I heard that the immortal of the Chan sect has begun to support the rebellious princes, wanting to overthrow the Shang Dynasty and make Emperor Xin pay the price for playing with the immortal.
This is the reason why the ministers are discussing this matter.
They were in a panic and wanted Emperor Xin to surrender immediately.
After all, in their view, becoming an enemy of immortals is a way to death.
Emperor Xin only felt that his ministers were making a lot of noise, so he randomly picked out a few of the ministers who jumped the most happily and punished them with burning with fire.
The other ministers suddenly became quiet.
Emperor Xin was very proud that his beloved concubine's punishment was indeed effective and every time he used it, he could achieve the desired effect.
He suppressed his impatience and spoke slowly: "The Imperial Master is on his way back to the capital. King Wucheng can hold off the rebellious princes for some time. When the Imperial Master comes back, those princes and immortals will all surrender."
The voice just fell.
"Report~"
A voice came from outside the palace, getting closer and closer.
The sound of armor clashing was heard, and a figure rushed into the hall and knelt under the throne: "Report, King Wucheng surrendered to Xiqi and is approaching Chaoge with the army of princes."
"How dare he! Come, burn King Wucheng's entire family to death and send the meat to King Wucheng."
Emperor Xin gave the order angrily.
"My beloved, why do these princes want to rebel against me? Are they greedy? I have already given them the title of princes, what else do they want? Now even King Wucheng wants to rebel against me!"
