Chapter 50 Grief
Chris has a dream.
He grew up in the village enduring hunger and cold. Almost every once in a while, a villager would die of hunger and cold. He wanted to change all this and save the fate of the village.
Finally, he was discovered to have the talent of a warrior by chance again, so with the spontaneous help of the villagers, he and Nilu came to Roserowe to learn skills. The villagers placed their final hopes on them.
Break free from the curse of poverty and break the suffering of hunger and cold.
Glory-level adventurer, this is Chris's goal. Although he knows that he is still a long way from this goal, he believes in himself. As long as he keeps working hard to train and practice, one day he will be able to touch that realm with his own hands.
But the reality was not as he thought.
The first step to becoming an adventurer was so difficult. When he finally finished the rookie mission with great effort and thought he could temporarily relax, fate played a joke on him again.
The instructor who taught him swordsmanship once jokingly told him, "If you encounter a ghoul, just commit suicide quickly. You can get rid of it sooner. Otherwise, you will experience the feeling of being eaten by a monster bit by bit."
Suicide? Don't be ridiculous. Chris didn't even have the strength to move his little finger. He could only watch the claws of death approaching his heart.
"Low-level gravity barrier!"
The invisible force of gravity pressed down on the ghoul, causing its body to pause.
But ghouls are not goblins, and the most basic gravity magic does not have as much effect on them as imagined.
It took only a moment for the ghoul to adjust to gravity.
"Gu! Gu!"
An unpleasant sound came out of its mouth, and it pushed the ground with its powerful legs and pounced towards Chris, opening its skeletal mouth wide as if to pounce on its prey.
Although suppressed by gravity magic, the zombie was still as fast as the wind and appeared in front of Chris in an instant.
He was almost face to face with the zombie, and the malice emanating from the other's body poured into Chris's mind like a flood. For a moment, Chris's consciousness was almost blank.
Only the devil-like face remained.
"Ouch!"
"Woo!"
The ghoul bit someone, and hot red blood splattered on Chris's face.
The faint salty smell of blood finally brought Chris back to himself and made him realize what was happening before his eyes.
"Sister Nilu...Sister Nilu!"
Chris looked at the scene in front of him in disbelief.
The ghoul's mouth bit Nilu's shoulder, and a piece of flesh had been torn off. The ghoul's upper and lower jaws were chewing in a regular pattern, and blood continued to seep out from the gap between its mouth.
Only a few white bones were left on Nilu's shoulders that were visible to the naked eye, and even half of her arm was torn off by the zombies and flew away to who knows where.
Regret, immense regret ate away at every part of Chris' body. He had never hated himself so much before. Apart from shedding meaningless tears, Chris was simply unable to do anything else.
"Sister Nilu! Sister Nilu! How are you!"
Chris frantically took out the only bottle of healing potion from his backpack and sprinkled it on Nilu's hideous wound.
This low-level healing potion was made from simple herbs and could only treat minor injuries and stop bleeding at best. It had no effect on wounds like Nilu's.
"Chris, leave me alone, just run away."
Where Chris couldn't see, Nilu's five fingers sank deeply into the muscles of the girl's legs. The girl's originally slender and white legs had five bloody holes left by her own hands.
Only in this way could Nilu stay 30% sober enough to talk to Chris.
Even so, the corners of her mouth were still twitching slightly, and her brows were tightly furrowed, which showed how much pain she was enduring. "Sister Nilu, wait for me, I'm going to kill that monster!"
Chris, his mind already overwhelmed by anger and grief, forgot the huge gap between himself and the ghoul. He picked up his sword and rushed towards the ghoul, wanting to kill the monster to avenge Nilu.
"Chris!"
Nilu's voice was extremely hoarse, and her loud shouting stunned Chris.
"Leave the Sloda Forest immediately! Otherwise, I will never forgive you even if I die!"
With a hoarse voice, Nilu slowly moved in front of Chris, facing the zombie.
The ghoul, which had just enjoyed a delicious meal, seemed even more excited. The monster's bestial desire for food spread like a gale.
"Sister Nilu!" Chris couldn't believe that those were the words Nilu said. When he was about to move forward with the sword in his hand, Nilu grabbed Chris' arm.
"Chris, don't let me die hating you."
Nelue's words no longer had the momentum they had just now, and there was also a hint of begging in them. There was only darkness and sadness left in her once lively eyes. Chris looked at the girl in front of him and tears flowed uncontrollably.
"You said that men shouldn't cry."
The corners of Nilu's mouth twitched, as if she wanted to smile, but this action that she could do at any time was now impossible no matter how hard she tried. The pain from the wound on her shoulder was like her whole body was being burned in magma, and Nilu's face was already stiff.
"Sister Nilu...it's all my fault..."
Why didn't he listen to Sister Nilu? Why was he so willful? Chris was once again overwhelmed by endless regret.
He choked and reached out his hand to touch Nilu's face, but the latter struggled and dodged.
"Ouch!"
The ghoul didn't care about the sad atmosphere of human parting. It had been seduced by the delicious taste of flesh and blood and pounced straight towards the two people.
Nilu found some strength from nowhere and pushed Chris away with one hand, but the price she paid was that the lower half of her body was caught in the zombie's mouth.
"Sister Nilu!"
Chris was furious and grabbed the sword, ready to fight the zombie to the death.
"Chris! Go!"
Enduring the pain of thousands of ants piercing her heart, Nilu's facial features were almost squeezed together. One of her hands desperately grabbed the ghoul's head and yelled with her last bit of strength: "Go!!!!!!!!!!!!"
"what!!!!!!!!!!"
Chris roared loudly, his tear glands almost dried up. He grabbed the sword and ran madly in one direction.
Watching Chris's figure gradually disappearing in the distance, Nilu finally relaxed, and her wrists, which had been tightly clenched, dropped weakly.
His lower body had already lost sensation and he was about to die. Nilu couldn't help but feel worried.
Without me by his side, will Chris be able to live well? If no one wakes him up in the morning, will he sleep until noon? If no one cooks for him, will he eat dirty food in the future? Who will help him sew his torn clothes?
I really feel a little unwilling...
In the last moments of her life, Nilu chanted a magic spell with her consciousness almost gone.
"Spirit of fire, please..."
