Chapter 412: A World Under Tyrant Rule
The nineteenth century has been called "the British century" because from the collapse of Napoleon's empire until the First World War, the British defeated every challenger and suppressed every rebel around the world; this fact represents a series of wars.
I don't know if it's a coincidence, but the starting point of the time zone is 1840. When the author investigated the history of the Morgan family, the first case he found was the Opium War.
"Damn it!" Lin You cursed while reading the information, but he only cursed this one sentence throughout the whole process; no one even knew who he was cursing at, or maybe he cursed everyone.
From "The First Crow" to "The Second Crow", in between there are also Britain's "Kabul Retreat" in Afghanistan, the Crimean War, the Indian anti-colonial uprising, the Second Anglo-Burmese War, the British invasion of Iran, and so on.
There were countless other isolated battles, but they were small-scale and the news did not even reach London, let alone the British Parliament.
"The Morgan family is very active. In almost every large-scale war, there are family members waving the flag and shouting." Holmes looked through the dusty minutes of the House of Lords and the House of Commons, and marveled;
"It is very strange that the Morgan family was almost unknown before 1840. Although they were also noble members of the House of Lords at that time, they just followed the crowd on most issues and rarely had their own opinions. Until 1840, it seemed that they suddenly got the hang of it and quickly became the representative of the diplomatic hardliners."
"What did you find?" Lin You came over; ever since the famous detective hit the jackpot, the author no longer underestimated his intelligence discovery and analysis capabilities. Although he couldn't tell him about the direction of the problem, he could handle the technical details.
"In 1838, Britain invaded Afghanistan for the first time and occupied Kandahar and Kabul the following year. For more than a year, the Morgans who were members of the House of Lords at the time did not leave any records of their speeches. If it weren't for the name 'Morgan' on the list of members, no one would even know that there was such a person sitting in the parliamentary seats."
Holmes complained as he turned the next page;
"But in 1840, the Morgan family suddenly became active. Not only did they make many speeches in the House of Representatives about foreign wars, but they also wrote letters to British commanders in Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf and other places to clarify their tough stance. The same war, with 1840 as the node, had completely different performances before and after."
Lin You did not ask any more questions, but took the records of the House of Lords and looked through them carefully. From the abrupt change in 1840 to the present 1899, the Morgan family had replaced two members of the House of Lords, but their attitude towards foreign wars was exactly the same.
They are all tough without distinguishing between advantages and disadvantages, gains and losses. However, this "abnormal" behavior seems very normal under the Western democratic system, and is regarded by other politicians as a means of gaining influence and consolidating political status.
Other politicians in the House of Representatives would at most sigh a few times, thinking that the Morgan family had occupied a "track" alone and reaped the most political dividends from the hardliners; but no one ever thought that there was anything wrong with this behavior that disregarded the country's actual situation and overall interests.
"Where is Patrick Morgan now?" Lin You closed the information and turned to ask Irene Adler.
"After signing the joint proposal of the House, Sir Morgan joined an investigation team sent by the House to Cape Town. They left London yesterday. According to the time, they should have crossed the Bay of Biscay and entered Portuguese waters." Irene demonstrated the strong work efficiency of the intelligence agency under her leadership.
"Heh... they can't wait to taste the deliciousness of war up close." Lin You sneered and ordered, "It seems that I have to do a thorough inspection of the Morgan family. I wonder to what extent they are controlled?"
"Then what should the rest of us do?" Irene asked; she knew very well that the so-called "examination" could only be done by someone with supernatural powers, or even by Lin You himself.
Lin You shook his head and warned: "From now on, you must withdraw all investigations and surveillance forces on the Morgan family and do nothing. The battle that may break out next is very dangerous and it is not something you can interfere with."
Holmes frowned slightly, with a hint of confusion: "So far, we have only been reasoning and speculating, and have not found any substantial evidence." "So what?" Lin You asked with a smile.
"So... you are ready to take coercive action against the Morgan family?" Holmes asked, "Isn't that too rash?"
Lin You smiled even more: "The rules of the game in the God Realm are different from your detective industry; if you want to develop your private detective business in the God Realm, please keep this in mind."
"What's the difference?" Holmes felt that he was being despised and was very dissatisfied.
"The rules of the God Realm are more like the law of the jungle between countries today. Do you know what international diplomacy is like today?" Lin You's smile turned cold. "Evidence is only needed when judging right and wrong between two countries of equal strength. At other times, evidence is not needed, and only 'reasonable suspicion' is enough."
"It sounds like big countries like Britain and France are like the ancient tyrants? Are the gods the same?" Holmes is a smart man who understands things immediately. He can ignore evidence and logic, and this kind of behavior is what detectives hate the most.
Lin You laughed loudly, with a hint of self-mockery in his laughter: "In the myths you have heard since childhood, Zeus, Odin, Jupiter, and even God, which one of them is not a tyrant? Which one of them has not done something similar to a tyrant?"
If the author had not seen through the nature of the gods and supreme gods of the pantheon, and had not clearly realized that the superiors above him were all tyrants, why would he be so cautious? He would have to think twice before saying a word, doing something, or striving for a little benefit.
Only children who have never been beaten will say "Society is so beautiful" and believe that the beautiful era of "I am for everyone, and everyone is for me" has arrived.
"You are going to deal with Patrick Morgan in person. Do you need to prepare a boat?" Irene did not have as many emotions as the man and was able to focus more on her work.
"No need. We need to find a more convenient way to get to South Africa this time." Lin You rejected Irene's suggestion. "It will take another week for Sir Morgan's ship to arrive in Cape Town. This time can be used to deal with the Morgan family."
It was impossible to eradicate the entire Morgan family. What Lin You could do was to find and remove the magic or divine power that the God of Truth used to manipulate the consciousness of the Morgan family members. This workload was not too big, and a week's free time was more than enough.
What really worries Lin You is how to deal with Patrick Morgan himself. This character was specially arranged by God to maintain the stability of the DC story world; even if there is a suspicion that he is being re-controlled by the God of Truth, how to deal with him specifically still needs to be carefully considered.
Again, working for a group of tyrants is not an easy job.
